Rheinischer Verein Karnevalsgesellschaft

"The Rhineland Mardi Gras Society of Chicago"

Beginninigs

The Rheinischer Verein Mardi Gras Society (RVMS) of Chicago was established in 1890 by eleven individuals from Cologne, Germany. The RVMS exists to celebrate and maintain the traditions from the old homeland in Germany. The Society's sub-clubs are responsible for different aspects of the celebrations.

Club's Purpose

The RV Mardi Gras Society exists to celebrate and maintain the traditions from the old homeland in Germany. These customs include electing a Prince and Princess to oversee the annual Mardi Gras celebrations. These celebrations are roughly equivalent to those held in New Orleans, Louisianna but with a German flair. The Mardi Gras season begins in early November and ends on the Monday before Ash Wednesday.

The Clubs within a Club

The RVMS has several distinct clubs within the general club. These include the Fanfaren Corps, the Amazonen Corps and the Prinzen Garde. Each of these groups has its own function. The Fanfaren Corps is the drum & bugle corps, the Amazonen is the dance troupe and the Prinzen Garde is the Prince's Court.
